Fortunately, Unfortunately

Have you ever had one of those days that feels like a rollercoaster? You are up, then you are down. Things are going great, then not so much… You know the days I am talking about, right?

When I was a kid, I used to like to write children’s stories . One story I wrote was called Fortunately, Unfortunately. I wrote it as an English assignment to show understanding of… something. Whatever the assignment accomplished, I remember being very tickled by the little story I wrote and the illustrations that went along with it. Turns out, I have always been a nerd.

This morning I was reminded of the Fortunately, Unfortunately story because, well, it was just one of those mornings. As I moved through the morning, I could hear the Fortunately, Unfortunately story playing out. It went something like this…

Unfortunately, this morning when I woke up, I knew I had an early meeting and was going to need to be in the office earlier than usual, which meant my usual slow-paced, relaxing morning routine would be less relaxing, and I wouldn’t have time for a run, walk or workout.

Fortunately, I was able to listen to my podcast while preparing my morning coffee and showered while the espresso brewed in my pourover. I even had time to spare and was able to do some of my morning work while enjoying my home-brewed latte before it was time to make breakfast.

Fortunately, I even had enough spare time to enjoy my coffee in the beautiful early morning weather while reading on the balcony.

Unfortunately, I had to leave the beautiful morning balcony to go inside to make breakfast.

Fortunately, I had just enough Rye bread to make 2 delicious breakfast sandwiches. Hummus and greens for me, ham and cheese for Jesse.

Unfortunately, while making the sandwiches I realized I had left my coffee out on the balcony. I rushed outside to get it, but when I brought it in I found that a bee had landed in the latte foam. Honestly, much more unfortunate for the bee than for me…

Fortunately, I had a Starbucks gift card from a tutoring side hustle I had done last fall. I could use that to get a coffee for work.

Unfortunately, I was rushing out the door for an early morning team meeting and didn’t know if I would have time to stop on my way into the office.

Fortunately, I got a text that the meeting was canceled.

Unfortunately, I was already showered, dressed and on my way out the door, so it was too late to take advantage of the canceled meeting to get in my morning run and podcast walk…

Fortunately, the canceled meeting gave me enough time to drive through Starbucks, and use the gift card for a “free – to -me” iced caramel macchiato.

Fortunately, I was able to go and do some work from the charming downtown where I usually run. I parked a few blocks away and on my walk over to the sitting green listened to my podcast of choice.

Fortunately, the morning turned out pretty great as I enjoyed a (very) brief podcast walk and then enjoyed my Starbucks while getting some extra work in.

I guess it was just one of those mornings for me.

I know, I know. To have my “problems”… Right!?! I would be thinking the same thing If I were reading this on a particularly grumpy and bumpy Tuesday. But, some days are better than others.

I will never be one to deny or ignore my luck, privilege or blessings because my cup overflows- in a good way, and I know it. Today, my rollercoaster turned out to be pretty tame which is probably why I had the energy to post this after a 9-hour work day instead of drowning my woes in a bowl of cheesy carbs while curling up with The Middle or a Lifetime “thriller” . There are plenty of days for that. But fortunately for me, today was one of those rollercoasters filled with more “fortunately” than “unfortunately”.
