Dear Reader,
Let me let you in on the secret. We are all faking it.
This past week was, somehow, long and fast at the same time. You know what I mean, right? Busy. Deadlines, More Deadlines. And deadlines I forgot about.
So, I am very excited to spend the day inside, staying warm and cozy on this very, very chilly Sunday. And so that I can get back into my bed and enjoy the lazy blobbiness of this deep freeze Sunday, I will keep this one short.
Yesterday, while I was running errands with my dad and brother, my dad said something along the lines of, “ Every day, people are going to work, trying to do jobs they don’t really know how to do, hoping they get it right.”
He then reflected on feeling that way in his own career. I found this enlightening and reassuring. I never imagined him not knowing how to do his job. But he experienced the same moments of doubt and insecurity in his career that we all, or at least most people I know, do.
So, on this cozy, cold (at least for me) Sunday, I just wanted to drop into your inbox and let you in on the little secret that we are all faking it. None of us always know what we are doing, and yet here we all are just out here giving it our best shot.
A few things I do that help me when I am struggling with these insecurities and doubts:
- Listen to encouraging podcasts– I particularly like Mel Robbins. I recently listened to this episode on confidence: https://open.spotify.com/episode/6Y6ww8nv0hcGACrj1B5KGb?si=71f760aac1774e6c
- I write it out: Journaling helps me process my thoughts and feelings. Sometimes, just putting my worries or doubts on paper makes them feel more manageable.
- I celebrate small wins: I make it a point to recognize what I’ve accomplished, no matter how small. It’s easy to focus on what’s left to do, but small victories keep me motivated.
- I talk to someone I trust: Sharing how I’m feeling with a friend, partner, or mentor helps me get perspective and reminds me I’m not alone in this.
- I move my body: A quick walk, some yoga, or even dancing around the kitchen clears my mind and lifts my mood.
- I keep a “done” list: Instead of just focusing on my to-do list, I keep a “done” list of tasks I’ve completed. It helps me see progress when I feel stuck.
- I remind myself of past successes: When I doubt myself, I think about a time I felt the same way but still figured it out. That reminder helps me push forward.
So, enjoy your cozy Sunday and if the Sunday Scaries start to try to creep in, just remember the secret. None of us know what we are doing. We are ALL faking it- at least sometimes.
Thank you for reading. If you haven’t yet, I invite you to subscribe and “join me for coffee” each Sunday morning.
Until next week, be well and take care,
Everett
