Dear Reader, What are we getting out of living?

Dear Reader,

What are we getting out of living?

Are we having any fun?

I know it might seem like an odd thing to be worried about right now. Fun? Who is having any fun?

So many of us are in survival mode—tightening our budgets, cutting back out of necessity, or preparing for uncertainty. I’ve shared recently about how I’m adjusting my own spending, pulling back in areas that had loosened as my financial situation improved. But while tightening up can feel restrictive, I’ve learned that lasting habit changes—especially tough ones like cutting back spending—are more sustainable when we make space for joy.

As I reallocate my budget to build a stronger financial buffer, I’m also making sure to incorporate fun in ways that feel intentional and meaningful.

Here are some ways I am maintaining joy in my life these days.

Homemade Chai Lattes: I love a good chai latte, especially in the colder months. Lately, I’ve been treating myself to them at local cafes, but as I cut back, I’ve picked up chai concentrate and a milk foamer wand to make cozy lattes at home.

🎧 Podcast Walks: Getting outside with an interesting podcast keeps me moving and gives me something to look forward to.

🍽️ Home Date Nights: Instead of going out for takeout or a fancy dinner, my partner and I have been making date nights out of cooking at home. Picking out fresh ingredients from the grocery store, experimenting with flavors, and making the cooking process part of the fun. My personal favorite? A fancy mac and cheese with high-quality cheeses and special mix-ins. It turns a simple meal into something that feels indulgent without all the extra costs (fees, tips, etc.) of going out.

💪 Workouts: I’m definitely not a gym rat, but I do genuinely enjoy being active and finding ways to move throughout my day—whether it’s walking outside, going for a run, or doing YouTube workouts. Some of my favorite ways to de-stress and get out of my head are free Emkfit dance workout videos 🏋️‍♂️—they make movement feel like a reward instead of a chore.

🐶 Playing with My Dog: Simple, free, and always a joy for me and him.

So, if you, like me, are tightening your budget, don’t cut out joy—make it intentional. Choose the little luxuries that bring comfort, connection, and fun. Frugality isn’t about deprivation; it’s about making what matters most sustainable. We can navigate this season with purpose and joy—one thoughtful choice at a time.

Whether it’s a warm cup of homemade coffee, a walk outside with your doggo and a good podcast, or a favorite meal made with extra care, I invite you to add a bit of joy to your day today. I am.

Take care,

Everett
