Dear Reader, Why should I tell you?

Dear Reader,

Why should I tell you?

Have you ever felt that way? I have. For me, it’s usually when I don’t feel like telling someone something is going to do any good.

I think our bodies feel that way, too, when we stop listening to them. Or maybe, over time, we just forget how to hear them. We push through, override signals, and try to fuel ourselves on caffeine and sheer willpower—until our bodies stop asking nicely.

That’s why this weekend, after a long week that somehow felt even longer than the one before, I asked myself what I needed. Really needed.

After sending my partner off to work Saturday morning, I paused.

Even though I was tempted to dive into a full day of productivity—more coffee, more movement, more distraction—I chose differently. Instead, I stretched into my body and sitting in Child’s Pose asked myself, What do you need this morning?

The answer came slowly, in layers.

My brain needed rest. So, I got back in bed and put on a movie.

My body needed nutrients. So, I heated up leftovers and ate.

From there, I felt ready to start a few things—Spring decorating, laundry. But before long, my body spoke again. I needed fresh air, movement, space. So, I took my dog on a walk, letting the sun and cool breeze wake me up in a way coffee never could.

I came back inside, finished my laundry, made my bed. And then? My body needed more rest. So, I listened. I got back into bed, put on another movie, and let myself nap.

This wasn’t the most exciting weekend. I didn’t go hiking. I didn’t wander downtown for coffee or browse Spring sales. But after a week that drained me, I chose to restore instead of deplete. I gave my body what it actually needed.

And I think—maybe—I’ll be better for it this week.

I hope you’re listening to what you need, too.

Take care and be well,

Everett

I have absolutely felt this way and I have learned to listen to my body. Although, sometimes, the siren has to go off, I listen before it does go off most of the time. Better than I used to be. When your body forces a shut down, it’s never good.
